The Fed Cup is the premier women’s international team tennis event. Launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ITF, it has continued to attract the best players in the women’s game, including Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams. The event title was shortened to Fed Cup in 1994.
Originally played as a week-long knockout event, the Fed Cup has been played on a home-and-away basis since 1995. Belgium became only the eighth nation to capture the Fed Cup when it defeated Russia 2-1 in the 2001 Final in Madrid.
